The Cayman Islands are part of the UK territory on the western Caribbean Sea. The Islands are located several kilometres northwest of Jamaica and south of Cuba. The Islands were inhabited until the 17th century when people from different backgrounds including shipwrecked sailors, pirates, slaves, deserters, and refugees settled there. The Cayman Islands constitute three main Islands namely: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is the biggest and most populous of the Islands. It is home to the Cayman Islands capital, George Town. Grand Cayman, like the rest of the Cayman Islands, is a rich territory with few natural attractions but is a pleasant tourist destination.
George Town is a harbour city and is included in many Caribbean cruises. It is also home to Owen Roberts International Airport, the main airport to all the other Islands. George Town is the main shopping area of the Island and is full of life and activities. However, the major activities and attractions are water-based. Some of the more common activities at the waterfront include submarine tours, glass-bottomed boat rides, paragliding, snorkelling and scuba diving. Seven-mile beach near George Town is popular for its beautiful beaches, numerous night clubs, and restaurants.
This was the capital of the Cayman Islands even before George Town became a town. However, Bodden town still holds some important attractions that are easy to access when you rent a car in Grand Cayman. The Guard house incline is one such attraction. It is located at the entrance of the town and was said to be a lookout for security people both on land and sea. It created a line of defense for the town from land and sea attacks. Another line of defense is the Pedro castle which was used as a lookout. The Pedro castle, which was constructed in the 16th century, is also the oldest building on the Island. This Castle was formerly known as St. James castle.
This is a 24-acre marine park formerly known as the Cayman Turtle farm. It is the only green turtle commercial farm in the world. It is located at the West End district. There are several attractions at the Marine Park that include a salt water snorkelling lagoon. This lagoon is full of turtles and other marine life. You can enjoy a swim with these amazing creatures. Other attractions include an aviary and iguana sanctuaries, predator tank with sharks and huge turtles, nature trail, and blue hole sunken caves. On the way to Boatswain’s beach, with a car for hire in Grand Cayman, you can stop at the Hell attraction and look at the strange black volcanic rock formation.
Grand Cayman is full of tourist attractions that make it a popular tourist destination. Other attractions include Stingray city and the Queen Elizabeth II botanical gardens on the South side near East end of the Island. Even though most areas of the Island have good roads, it is important to get a car with a powerful engine from a car rental in Grand Cayman. Also remember to make reservation well in advance to avoid any last minute inconveniences.
