Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Leeward Islands, which are a part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Anguilla is the northernmost island in the chain, 10 miles north of Saint Martin. The territory includes a few smaller islands that are uninhabited and the island of Anguilla with a population of 15,000. That may sound low, but Anguilla is less than 15 miles from the West End Village at one end to Island Harbor and the East End Village at the other end, and barely three miles at its widest. The weather is warm and sunny and the temperature a pleasant 80 degrees (27 °C) most of the time. If you are arriving by air, the first place you will see after you land at Wallblake Airport is the capital called " The Valley." Get a car for hire in Anguilla and you can get started exploring the 33 beaches in Sandy Ground, Island Harbor, and other points along the coast.
Locals prefer to call it the Old Valley, and the capital of Anguilla is still the same old place on the road to Crocus Hill, where things have not changed all that much since colonial times. You can get a car for rent in Anguilla and take a tour of the colonial architecture from the Wallblake House plantation to Ebenezer’s Methodist Church and what remains of the Old Court House up on Crocus Hill. Go down to Crocus Bay to enjoy the beach and maybe do some snorkeling.
Sandy Ground is what passes for a nightlife hotspot on Anguilla. Located between North Hill and South Hill, the beach at Sandy Ground has everything from piers to dive shops, bars, restaurants, apartments, guest houses, and resort cottages. The Pumphouse bar is a historic tourist site by day, but when the sun goes down, it turns into a raucous place where the decibels of reggae and the flow of rum punch complement each other. Elvis' Beach bar across the street from the Pumphouse is just as much fun, and a bit of a sports bar too.
The waters at Island Harbor are calm enough that children can float around unsupervised without any fear. In fact, the kids here spend a lot of their time splashing around and jumping from the pier that stretches out towards Scilly Cay. This is the place to be if you want to try the seafood – order some lobster and crayfish at Scilly Cay. Island Harbor is also the best place to rent a villa for a family holiday in Anguilla.
It is hardly possible to visit all 33 beaches when you have less than a week to spend on the island. So what you do is book your car rental in Anguilla right now and figure out which beaches you want to see. Apart from Crocus Bay, Little Bay, Sandy Ground and Island Harbor, you will likely be visiting Blowing Point since it has the ferry terminal. Shoal Bay West and Sandy Hill Bay bookend your beach hopping expedition at the West End Village and East End Village respectively, so they should also be on your list. Add Cove Bay, Forest Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Savannah Bay, and you have all the top beaches covered.
