If the hire car gets damaged or stolen, always phone the police. Make sure that they give you a copy of the accident statement so you can provide evidence to the car hire provider and insurance company.

This is absolutely vital if you are to be entitled to the insurance benefit.

Tip: For car rental in Italy, do not call the Carabinieri, as they are not the relevant authority in such cases. Please contact the local police (Polizia).
