Approximately 850,000 people live on the largest of the Canary Islands . Although the volcanic island of Tenerife lies off the coast of Morocco, it belongs to Spain as do Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
Due to trade winds, the island has mild temperatures year round, making it for many tourists into a sought-after holiday destination that can best be discovered in a hired car. From the middle of the island rises a volcanic mountain with the largest caldera in the world and Spain’s highest mountain, Pico del Teide. Tenerife is also very interesting for nature lovers.
In addition to many native species of plants and animals that can only be found here, such fantastic numbers of whales turn up off the island as is seldom observed anyplace else in the world. Thanks to the motorway and good streets, the wonderful beaches and sights can be easily reached by hired car. From the airport in Tenerife you can start a tour of the island in a hired car heading north or south to the most beautiful corners and bathing resorts on the island.
