Johannesburg is the capital city of the Gauteng, a province in
South Africa
. With a population of 3,888,180 million Johannesburg is the largest city in southern Africa with a population of nearly 8 million. It is mostly sunny and dry in the city and is not actually a classic tourist destination and more often serves as the hub for excursions to Cape Town, Durban and Kruger National Park. Nevertheless, the city has some very interesting attractions. Worthy of a trip, for instance, would be the Market Theatre (with three stages and a famous Jazz cellar) set up at the old market building. Diagonal Street is the home to mainly Indian houses with their picturesque, one-storey shops. There are excellent hotels and restaurants, shopping streets, galleries, museum and theatres throughout the city. Even the picturesque suburbs are not without their charms: the green belt around Brammfontein Spruit and the many golf courses are pleasant, pretty places like the suburbs in the north. A good orientation point is Top of Africa, the viewing platform on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre (Africa’s tallest building) in Commission Street. Besides a bar and restaurant, the building also features numerous shops. It’s a good idea to rely on a hired car to see Johannesburg up close and personal, because public transport in South Africa cannot generally be recommended.
