Car hire Funchal information
Funchal is the capital city of the island of Madeira and the district in
Portugal that bears the same name. The district includes the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo as well as the Desertas and Savage Islands. The city of Funchal comprises ten municipalities that are a popular winter health spa for people from England in particular. Funchal means “fennel” and was most likely given this name because when it was discovered the island was found to be covered by vast fennel undergrowth. Also worth seeing are the Cathedral and a large number of other churches, fortification sites and several museums. A great way for you to explore these places of interest is by hired car. There are local stations where you can get an inexpensive hired car so you can get out and explore the area on your own. The Mercado dos Lavradores (farmers market) is also something special in Funchal, offering a lavish amount of tropical fruits and vegetables. Monte, a quiet and contemplative holiday resort, lies approximately six kilometres north of Funchal. Terreiro da Luta is located next to it at a higher altitude. With a little time, you might also make a boat trip to
Morocco or
Las Palmas.
