Shannon is the newest city in
Ireland. It was created in the western part of the country after the World War II and received city status in 1982. Shannon now has just under 10,000 inhabitants. Beyond Ireland’s borders Shannon is known for its international airport. A major low-cost airline is located here and maintains scheduled flight services to places such as
Stansted and Gatwick (both near
London),
Brussels and
Milan. Quite a few car hire companies are also located in Shannon. The airport was built to make the route across the Atlantic as short as possible, because at that time airliners had a range of only about 4,000 mile.
