Car hire Dortmund information
With just under 600,000 inhabitants Dortmund is the largest city in the Ruhr Basin in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is both the trading and business centre of the federal land. In former times Dortmund was known as an industrial city. The coal mining and steel industries here were the largest sectors of the economy. The city is now being transformed towards research, high-tech and services. But apart from business the city also has a lot to offer. In addition to the many theatres and opera houses those interested in culture will find quite a few museums and exhibitions that are certainly worth visiting. Examples of these are the Museum at the Ostwall, the Museum for Art and Cultural History and the Brewery Museum.
In Dortmund there are also a lot of historic and modern examples of architecture worth seeing, such as the old town hall, the former Westfalenstadion (now Signal Iduna Park stadium) or the buildings along Westenhellweg, a shopping street. Night owls will find a commendable put scene in the urbane Kreuz district. They can then regenerate in one of the many parks and green areas. Besides quite a few gardens and wooded areas, the “green metropolis” also has the big Dortmund Zoo. Dortmund has a very successful football team that has often become the champion of the German Bundesliga. Across the country fans provide a bitter rivalry with a team from Munich that is also very successful. With a hired car it’s easy to visit both Dortmund and nearby cities such as Bochum, Essen or Recklinghausen.
