Car hire Vienna - Austria information
Vienna is the capital city and the smallest state in Austria, which like an island is surrounded by the largest state of Lower Austria. As an urban area it is comparable to Auckland. The Danube, just less than 300 metres wide, flows though Vienna to Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Most of Vienna’s places of interest lie within the historical core of the city centre with its old town alleyways, numerous churches and palaces. The cityscape here is greatly shaped by very old buildings, there are hardly any modern skyscrapers here.
The middle of the city centre is one of the most famous landmarks of Vienna, the magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Located in front of the cathedral and starting at the spacious Stephansplatz begins the Graben pedestrian zone. One of the most upmarket shopping malls in Vienna, Kärntner Street, is lined with boutiques, shops, cafes and hotels. Other well-known places of interest are of course the Vienna State Opera House, the Lipizzaner horses at the Spanische Hofreitschule and the famed Hundertwasserhaus, designed by the artist of the same name. There are many other sights in Vienna that are waiting to be discovered as part of a city tour by hired car. Besides Vienna, other cities in Austria such as Innsbruck, Graz and Salzburg are all worth a visit by hired car.
